Sony's Handheld | Nintendo Shaken?

Details are just now filtering in about a new handheld competitor to the GameBoy Advance and GBA: SP. Now that Microsoft's Pre-E3 conference has drawn to a close, it is the turn of Sony and after discussing how there will be no EA games online for anything other than a Sony system, Konami's Metal Gear Solid 3 and the next GTA game will remain PS2 exclusive for the time being, Ken Kutaragi (the brains behind the PlayStation) unveiled the news that could knock Nintendo for six.

Yes, the time has finally come for Sony to step into the handheld arena with the release of its very own portable video game system, entitled the PlayStation Portable. It will utilise small CDs, will fit in the palm of your hand and looks like a mini disc with the outer casing - UMD - universal media disc. 2.4" diameter, 1.8 gigs storage. Other features mentioned include:

  • It will have an anti-piracy;
  • Will also use MPEG 4, have a widescreen LCD 16:9 screen, as well as being backlit;
  • Can handle 3D polygons and curved surfaces;
  • Runs at 480 x 232 pixels, with the unit measuring 4.5-inches; and
  • It will have a memory stick for saving purposes.

    Whether Nintendo will comment on this newly announced device during its conference later today, is unknown. But it would be highly unusual for the Japanese behemoth to remain silent on such an important issue.
